Sierra + Michael's Moody Wedding At The Museum Of Man in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA

July 19, 2017

About a year ago I received an email from a bride living up in San Fransisco who was getting married in San Diego. After speaking with her, I learned that she happened to be working for Honeybook, (an online platform for creative businessess that I use) and also worked with someone I worked with at the San Diego Convention Center. Can you say a small world?! After speaking with Sierra for the first time, it felt like we were supposed to work together. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed working with Sierra and Michael and was so excited to see their wedding vision come to life.

Their Story: "The night we met, we both weren’t expecting much. A distraction that turned into so much more. Michael was in grad school and I was moving to Korea in a few months. Both of us looking for a short term distraction. It’s funny how life always has it’s own plans. Fast forward 3 years, we have made our home in the same country, even more, the mecca for both of our industries. Shortly after my return to the United States, we decided to make the move to the Bay Area to pursue our passions. Ever since then, we have fallen deeper in love and built a home in Oakland. On September 20, 2015 on the cliffs of Jenner, California, sweaty palmed Michael bent down on one knee and asked an all too knowing Sierra to marry him. They spent the better part of an hour overlooking the California coast, giggling and cheers-ing to the beginning of their life together. Come join us as we celebrate our love with the people that matter the most. We couldn't have gotten here without you."

In creating the overall look for the wedding, Sierra chose the Museum of Man due to it's unique and fun ambiance. She wanted her wedding to match the feel of the venue and therefore chose something moody and slightly 'prehisotric' feeling. When it came to colors, we went with burgundy, grey and navy blue as they are able to create that 'moody' vibe Sierra was craving. When it came to the floral, we used lots of proteas to add to the prehistoric look. For the first time I spoke with Sierra, she was adamant about not having 'cheap' linen. She felt that linen had the ability to transform the look of a space, and I completely agree with her!  Because of this, we choose two tones of upgraded grey linens for the guest tables and deep burgundy linens for the speciality tables.

When it came to stationery, we wanted to add in the 'vintage' touch Sierra was hoping for. The guest book was an old dinausar pop-up book that Sierra grew up with and we had it covered in leather and hand written by Simply Rooted Calligraphy. As for the table numbers,  they were all different and inspired by vintage paintings of Balboa Park. The seating chart was designed similarly, and the goal was for it to look like a museum exhibit sign. All in all, we were so happy with how everything turned out and feel like it fit their vision perfectly!

Sierra's Favorite Part of Planning: 'Our cake just fell into place. It came at a particularly frustrating point in the planning. We were both done with decision making and frustrated. We made an appointment at the pandulceria (bakery) I've always gone to throughout childhood. We walked in and Michael immediately fell in love with the different flavors. The couple who own the shop were super sweet and we walked out with a cake in budget and that we absolutely loved. It was the easiest decision we made and I remember the shared look between us, "We can do this." '

Working with this couple was a dream. Look back at the day my favorite part was when we decided on the spot to do the bouquet and garter toss from the bancony at the museum. This was such a fun moment for everyone! Thanks again Sierra and Michael for allowing us to be apart of your big day! We loved every minute, and wish you two nothing but the best!
