La Jolla Wedding: Whitney + Ryan's Mid-century Modern Destination Wedding

La Jolla Wedding - Mid Century Modern Wedding

Our gorgeous couple, Whitney and Ryan, live in Dallas and opted for a destination wedding in San Diego. Since Whitney was little she had always dreamed of getting married on the West Coast. She had lived here when she was a child, and there was clearly part of her that was a 'Cali' girl at heart. Because they were planning from afar, Whitney had to completely trust us to bring her vision to life, especially since her and Ryan weren't able to make any scouting trips out to San Diego.

In designing her wedding, Whitney wanted something non-traditional with a mid-century modern feel and would have held their wedding to Palm Springs if it was easily accessible. Since she wanted to stay in San Diego, we searched and searched, and finally found a gorgeous mid-century modern house in la jolla that allowed them to hold a wedding. The architecture of the home, all the wooden elements in the backyard, the pool and the lounge furniture made it a perfect fit. What made it even better was that our happy couple and their family were able to stay at the house for the weekend.

Whitney wanted a very 'clean' and modern feeling dress. Her dress was completely satin with gorgeous beading details. The bridesmaids dresses were very modern, a neutral color and flattered everyone! The groom's suite was slim fit. Remy had an adorable flower girl dress and greenery flower crown.

Designing the details was a blast! Whitney was a very detail oriented person and wanted a very clean, modern and retro look. To achieve this, we went with black and white with touches of orange and wood. When it came to the ceremony, we held it in the lawn space behind the house. The area was surrounded by greenery, citrus trees and modern wooden fence. We chose modern black and white eames and school chairs. The ceremony backdrop was a boxwood greenery with the phrasing 'La Jolla Lovin,' which was their wedding hashtag. Since the bridal party was so big (10 on each side!) we only had the maid of honor and best man stand up front.

After the ceremony, guests moved over to the pool area for cocktail hour. Here they were greeted with specialty drinks at the modern black bar with gold shelving. The place card display was one of the main attractions. It was a white textured backdrop with the phrase 'Let Your Love Shine BRIGHT' in copper lettering. Individual wooden sunglasses with guests names were placed on shelves and accented with greenery and pops of kumquats. The lawn area, where the ceremony took place, and the pool area were divided by black and white drapes. This made it easy for us to 'flip' the ceremony space into the reception space.

After cocktail hour, we opened the black and white curtains, and invited guests back to the lawn area where dinner was ready. We designed this space with rows of long tables and alternated black and white chairs. In order to keep the decor interesting, we set each table with slightly different decor. The end tables were adorned with actual orange trees on the end tables and the middle tables had different arrangements of simple white and green arrangements with pops of orange.

When it came to place settings, Whitney wanted them to be detailed and welcoming. We put a clean white menu on top of a black napkin, wrapped it with black and white ribbon, and accented with a piece of greenery and small kumquat. We also had name cards at each setting made of small marble tiles. The table numbers were made of wood with a modern gold number and this pulled the wood elements from the surroundings into the tablescapes. The sweetheart table had bold orange chairs and a "La Jolla Lovin" backdrop. All tables accented with modern gold votives.

After dinner the attention turned to dancing by the pool. Believe it or not, this gorgeous and elegant wedding somehow ended up turning into a fun pool party by the end of the night! The whole bridal party jumped in the pool and groomsmen actually threw the bride in. After that more than half the guests were swimming while the rest of the guests danced the night away. This wedding was such a fun expereince!

We clearly loved working with this fun and detail oriented couple. Working with Whitney and Ryan on designing their dream wedding was a blast, and I wish them both the very best!
