How To Guarantee You Get Awesome Engagement Photos

When it comes to engagement photos, there are a definitely couples that are stoked to be in front of the camera and cannot wait to go pick that perfect outfit! Most of us, on the other hand, fall onto the other end of the spectrum, and have no idea where to go for photos, what to wear, or how to pose for their photos. For those of us in this category, we can't even begin to imagine being excited about looking through hundred of photos of ourselves! (And yes, I am definitely in this category with you all!) If you fall in that later category like I do, don't fret! We've got answers for you!

First and foremost, if you are on the fence about doing engagement photos, I strongly urge you to go for it. Not only will you be able to incorporate your photos into your weddings day (think guest book and save the dates), but it will also give you the chance to get comfortable with your photographer. I can't even begin to tell you how important this is in allowing to relax on your wedding day.

Now let's dive into the good stuff. How EXACTLY do you ensure you get those Pinterest worthy engagement photos?! Keep on ready for a few expert tips that will take your photos to the next level.

1. Hire A Hair and Makeup Pro:

While I know it can be tempting to save a few bucks and do your own hair and makeup, I strongly urge you against it. You are going to be looking at these photos for a long time (and so are all of your guests!), and no matter how hard you try, you aren't going to be able to create the same look that a pro would create. With that being said, I'm not saying you need to to get heavy makeup and a fancy hairdo, the pros have ways of creating stunning natural looks.

This is a great opportunity to test out a hair stylist and makeup artist you are considering for you wedding. You could even use this as your actual beauty 'trial' for the big day. That way your money is going use, and you are getting pampered for a reason.

Expert Tip: Wear slightly MORE makeup than you normally would. Makeup doesn't translate as heavy into photos, so wearing a little bit more than normal will actually more you look 'normal.'

2. Bring Multiple Outfits:

When at all possible, try to orchestrate two different outfits. I always suggest selecting one pair of outfits that are fancier, as you don't get those types of photos very often. The second outfit should be more 'you.' If dressing up is your thing, go for it, but if you are a jeans and t-shirt type of gal, consider a more casual outfit for your second outfit.

I also suggest multiple outfits, as you may like one of them better in photos. I know when I had my engagement photos, my fiancé and I were most excited about our first set of outfits, and ended up liking the photos of our second outfit better. Having that variety is going to ensure you like your photos.

In selecting your outfits, I have two pieces of advice:

1. Consider your surroundings (You don't want to completely blend in!)

2. Don't be too 'match-matchy.' (aka don't both be in jeans and a red shirt) It will actually take the focus off you and your fiancé.

3. Listen to your Photographer:

Remember, you hired your photographer for a reason; hopefully because your LOVED their style. If you want your photos to turn out just as awesome as all those other photos in their gallery and on their instagram page, then you need to trust them. If they tell you they know the perfect spot (which seems ridiculous to you) or want you to hold hand and run, DO IT. They have a creative eye, and if you trust it, you will end up with stellar photos.

"Trust your photographer's advice, whether for hair and makeup referrals, wardrobe selections, location ideas, or posing. They're the expert and are there to guide you toward your perfect engagement photos!" Cavin of Cavin Elizabeth Photography

4. Location:

Don't just pick a location for the sake of picking a location. I strongly urge you to think of places that are meaningful to you as a couple. (ie. your favorite beach spot or the spot you got engaged!) Picking a location that means something to you is going to make these photos even more memorable. Choosing a spot you feel comfortable is also going to make you feel more relaxed in the photos.

5. Get creative:

Don't be afraid to get creative and choose a fun theme! We have had couples do everything from ultra stylish nature engagement sessions, to 1940's themed, to Disney World Sessions, to an entire session revolving around Nicholas Sparks' "The Notebook." This is the perfect time to have fun and to let your personalities shine through! If you want to go big, but aren't sure how, consider bringing on a wedding planner. Many wedding planners can also design and style adorable engagement sessions!

Even if you don't want to get THAT creative, it can be fun to bring a few smaller props to your engagement session. For, example, if you doing your engagement session outside, consider bringing a blanket. It is wonderful for sitting on and using it to 'snuggle' with your fiancé makes for adorable engagement photos.

Cheers,

Ashley
